At Innovations we strive to provide culturally competent services for children and adults in the legal system, and to the community.
Dr. Martin has experience conducting forensic evaluations in juvenile and adult criminal settings, including competency to stand trial/fitness to proceed, sanity/lack of responsibility, juvenile waiver, violence risk, and general psychological evaluations that can be used for either pre- or post- disposition purposes.
For consultation services, Dr. Martin can provide her professional expertise to attorneys, judges, or news and print media for criminal cases and mental health matters. Consultations can include, but are not limited to, helping to understand particular mental health disorders and their impact on individuals, increasing knowledge of mental health resources and how to access them, and understanding factors that can lead to criminal behavior.
Dr. Martin provides presentations and talks on mental health, doing so with various audiences in the past including medical & mental health professionals, attorneys and judges, law enforcement, first responders, and community groups. Dr. Martin’s talks have encompassed topics such as depression, anxiety, children’s mental health, serious mental illness and disorders commonly seen by first responders. She has also done talks on issues within the sub-field of forensic psychology, such as competency to stand trial, insanity, and violence risk, and how to know when your client may need a particular forensic evaluation (i.e., relevant to attorneys).
Dr. Martin is available for media appearances to provide clinical expertise in news media, podcasts, and documentaries. She has been featured on KPRC-2 and ABC13 Houston, as well as podcasts, and she has an interest in spreading mental health awareness in this outlet.
One of Innovations’ core specializations is forensic psychology, the practice of assisting the courts to answer a forensic question in criminal proceedings by considering relevant aspects of a defendant’s mental health. Through her training and practice, Dr. Martin strives to provide concise and data-driven evaluations that clearly support her forensic opinion. As noted above, these evaluations can be done both in the juvenile justice and adult criminal justice settings.
Having experience with adults (ages 18 – 70) of various racial and ethnic backgrounds in the criminal justice system and outpatient settings, Dr. Martin has seen various examples of serious mental illness and personality disorders, such as Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective Disorder, Delusional Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, Antisocial Personality, and Borderline Personality Disorder among others. She also has experience with these disorders and co-occurring substance abuse and trauma-related disorders.
Dr. Martin has experience working with children and adolescents (ages 4 – 17) in the juvenile justice system and outpatient settings, assessing and diagnosing disorders commonly seen in this population including disruptive behavior disorders, trauma-related disorders, learning disorders, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and other neurodivergent conditions, such as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
