Dr. Tonya Martin is a Licensed Clinical and Forensic Psychologist in Houston, Texas, and is the owner/founder of Innovations Forensic & Psychological Services, PLLC. She earned her Doctorate of Psychology degree (Psy.D.) in Clinical Forensic Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, and her Bachelor of Science and Art degrees in Psychology and Criminology at The University of Florida. She has been licensed as a psychologist in Texas since 2016.
Throughout her training and practice, Dr. Martin has worked with young children, adolescents, and adults in state prisons, county jails, juvenile detention centers, residential treatment centers, schools, and outpatient/community-based mental health settings doing both psychological evaluations and therapy. Recipients of her services have experienced a wide array of mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, disruptive behavior disorders, trauma-related disorders, substance abuse, and serious mental illnesses such as Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder. Due to the settings she’s worked in, clients/evaluatees have been and continue to be primarily Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color (BIPOC) from disadvantaged backgrounds who have experienced various traumas. As such, it is important to Dr. Martin to highlight relevant multicultural contexts in all aspects of her work. Dr. Martin also taught a Master’s level course as adjunct staff at Prairie View A&M University in the Psychology Department for a brief time and teaching has remained one of her interests. Overall, Dr. Martin is dedicated to providing quality services and spreading mental health awareness to the community.
Innovations Forensic & Psychological Services, PLLC functions as a private practice that provides two major services: 1) Forensic psychological evaluations for juvenile and criminal courts and 2) Speaker services to the community and media to raise awareness, fight the stigma of mental illness, provide education on resources, and assist lay persons in navigating the criminal justice system if they or their loved one with a mental illness lands in the legal system.
Dr. Martin also has a passion for teaching and has given numerous talks and presentations on mental health to various audiences. Topics have included depression, anxiety, serious mental illness, adolescent mental health, and issues within the sub-field of forensic psychology, such as competency to stand trial, insanity, and violence risk.
